My friend Jason was excited about the idea of being able to watch about 3,500 TV channels in HD over the internet without paying monthly cable subscription. I was curious and skeptical at the same time about the quality of the service and I asked him to show me how to have TV channels on a computer. He was still investigating when I joined him in his quest. So is it a scam?
You need to read this before you pay for a service that will allow you to watch on your computer over 3,500 TV channels in HD.
It is tempting not to pay cable bills but it sounded ridiculous to me. Those cable and satellite companies have huge costs in order to provide content. However, I thought that maybe they found a new business model and they cover costs through advertising.
So, is it possible to watch TV on your computer? In principle, it is possible and hulu.com is an example. However, I’ve seen before many satellite to PC services that provide poor picture quality, bad customer service, and limited access to the channels you really want to see. In fact, most television for PC services are terrible. Of course, it is not worth making the switch to low quality TV channels on your computer, even while saving.
Jason was particularly interested in Satellite Direct because they claim to provide superior quality and HD channels.
Although Satellite Direct was named by Interactive Media Magazine as “Unequivocally the best TV to PC software on the net”, Satellite Direct is the worst service I’ve seen when it comes to watching television on your computer or laptop. It is true that you pay only one fee of $49.95 without additional monthly fees… But can you enjoy unlimited access to over 3,500 HD channels with Satellite Direct- including premium movie channels and all of the best sports stations? Hardly ever! Why?
In fact, Jason bought the service and downloaded the application that allows him to connect to over 3500 channels. First of all, the number of stations available in each country are far more less than what they claim. Second, many of the stations do not work. Third, the picture quality is horrible. The size of the video window is very small. So when you maximize to full screen, the resolution becomes horrible.
I connected the PC to a 42”Panasonic Plasma HDTV through HDMI and started the application. I searched for all those HD channels but could only find a handful. It is true that there is no hardware to install but that is a big disadvantage in my opinion because it leaves all the decoding to be done by your CPU.
It is only a one time price for just $49.95 but I would say save your money or spend it on something more useful. Ordering is easy but getting a refund is a pain. The setup is easy and you’ll be up and running in minutes but you will not enjoy 3,500 TV channels on your computer. Satellite Direct is a scam and if you do not believe me, go ahead and buy the service.
